PROFILE
Junior Associate
Sofia Kemunto Nyagaka is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a background in corporate practice and public policy. With about 2 years of experience, she has developed special interest in civil litigation, corporate and commercial law, employment law alongside matters to deal with data protection and privacy. Her work is driven by a commitment to deliver practical, strategic and client-focused legal solutions.
Following my undergraduate studies, I joined the Kenya School of Law, where I successfully completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Law in December 2022. The rigorous training refined my practical legal skills, particularly in litigation, legal drafting, and professional ethics. I was thereafter admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and became a member of the Law Society of Kenya, marking a significant milestone in my legal career.
My professional training began during my pupillage at the Kenya Ports Authority, where I gained invaluable exposure to corporate and commercial legal practice within a large public institution. During this period, I conducted legal research, drafted legal opinions, reviewed commercial contracts and service level agreements, and supported senior advocates in dispute resolution and trial preparation. This experience gave me a solid understanding of corporate governance, compliance, and the practical workings of legal departments in complex organizations.
I later served as a Legal Assistant at Somakim Construction & Trading Service Limited, where I was involved in ensuring statutory and regulatory compliance, contract review, and advising on the interpretation and implementation of human resource policies. This role sharpened my ability to provide practical legal solutions tailored to business needs and reinforced the importance of proactive legal risk management.
In February 2024, I joined the Ministry of Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development as a Legal Assistant Officer on contract. This role significantly broadened my exposure to public sector legal work, policy formulation, and legislative processes. I drafted legal opinions, contracts, and compliance documents, supported both legal and technology departments on data protection and privacy matters, and participated in tribunal proceedings. Notably, I served as a member of committees involved in the formulation of the Co-operatives Bill, 2024 and the Start-Up Bill, 2023, experiences that deepened my understanding of legislative drafting and policy development.
To complement my growing interest in technology and data governance, I obtained a Certificate in Data Protection from Strathmore University (CIPIT) in September 2023. This qualification has enhanced my capacity to advise on data privacy, information security, and regulatory compliance in an increasingly digital business environment.
Currently, as a Junior Associate Advocate at Kimiti & Associates, Advocates My responsibilities include drafting pleadings and submissions, attending court and tribunals, conducting legal research, reviewing contracts, and participating in negotiations and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. I take pride in delivering thorough, well-reasoned legal work while maintaining clear and professional communication with clients.
Overall, I consider myself a detail-oriented, dependable, and adaptable lawyer with a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence. I am motivated by the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to legal practice, support clients in navigating complex legal challenges, and continue growing professionally in a dynamic and evolving legal landscape.
